Press Release

Who in the world celebrates water? And where can you find Ontario’s most refreshing local event - where you can drink all you want, pure spring water that is; hear great speakers; enjoy music and tasty local food, and the price of admission is free? Virtually nowhere these days except for the third annual Elmvale Water Festival, at the Elmvale Arena and Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 22, starting at 11 A.M.

Why are people still talking about last year’s Elmvale Water Festival, with featured speaker Maude Barlow? Because it was a refreshing good time for all ages and everyone left with more than they came with because the event’s theme, water, is on everyone’s mind these days.

The Elmvale Foundation is proud to announce that this year’s featured speaker is Chris Wood. A veteran journalist, Chris Wood’s latest book, “Dry Spring: The Coming Water Crisis of North America”, shows how climate change is already casting a long shadow over our global and local water supply. Wood dismisses the concern of many activists, who believe the U.S. poses a threat to Canada’s water. Instead, he argues the biggest threat to our water is how we manage it. Wood will inspire you to think differently about something you take for granted everyday. Other speakers include Laurie Schutt, Director of Wye Marsh, Derek Mueller, Canadian Ice Services, and Elmvale Foundation founder Dr. William Shotyk. In addition, Ian Connacher’s film Addicted to Plastic will be shown at this year’s festival.

A children’s educational centre will explain how water works and why it’s protection is important. Kids will also be wowed by Wye Marshes’ “Birds of Prey” exhibit. A dunk tank and great games will keep them entertained and smiling all day.

And couple great food from the farmer’s market and an all day BBQ, with great local musicians on stage and you have a perfect, affordable way, to spend the day at the Elmvale Arena and Fairgrounds.

Be sure to mark this event on your calendar. We know you will find it refreshing. For further information, please go to www.elmvale.org.

The Elmvale Water Festival:

The Elmvale Water Festival (EWF) is a one-of-a-kind event designed to educate the general public about the value of our water resources and the need to protect them for future generations. The festival uses lectures, exhibits, films, educational displays, and children's activities to get the message across. Thousands of litres of pure, local spring water are supplied free of charge, in re-usable non-toxic water bottles. Music, entertainment, games, and food culminating with an evening dance entices community and area involvement. All lectures are filmed and broadcast via our Web site, making this a global event.

Our focus is to educate the general public about the environment using water: where it comes from, where it goes, and how it evolves. By celebrating and educating, we reinforce the importance of this tremendous natural resource, and encourage its protection for future generations.
